He was scary....with regard to France's political morality after Louis XVI's death, he stated:
"If virtue be the spring of a popular government in times of peace, the spring of that government during a revolution is virtue combined with terror: virtue, without which terror is destructive; terror, without which virtue is impotent."
Nothing like a little terror to make a country come together....
For me, Robespierre is the ultimate forebear of Napoleon in French politics. Both men were brilliant with an honest concern for the good of their country. But, as a wise man once said, ultimate power corrupts ultimately and both fell into the pit of ultimate power. No one, after all, is incorruptible.
I don't like him. He ruined an "honest" princess...poor Caroline.
